iPhone 14 review: Is good enough good enough?

At a glanceExpert's Rating ProsAction Mode is brilliantFaster low light shots so you don’t have to hold the iPhone still for as longConsPrice increase in many parts of the worldNo Dynamic Island or always-on displayFew changes as compared to the now cheaper iPhone 13Our VerdictThe iPhone 14 has enough new features to make it an excellent choice if you are looking to upgrade from an older iPhone. While it’s not a huge leap up from the previous model, the new camera features will be enough to make iPhone 13 users jealous. Best Prices Today: Apple iPhone 14 128 GB mitternacht Retailer Price €999.00 View Deal €999.00 View Deal €999.00 View Deal €999.00 View Deal €999.00 View Deal €999.00 View Deal €999.00 View Deal €1069.00 View Deal Price comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwide View more prices The iPhone 14 is basically an iPhone 13s. It features a very similar processor and has a very similar appearance as the previous generation, but like the S iPhones of old offers a bunch of new camera features that improve photography in impressive ways. Starting at $799, the iPhone 14 costs the same as the iPhone 13 in the U.S.—though if you live elsewhere you will be paying more. In the U.K. for example the iPhone 14 costs £849 while the iPhone 13 was £779. This bump in price means the standard iPhone is less affordable than it was for many, and when you consider you could save $100/£100 by buying a new iPhone 13, the question is: Do the new features justify the price? What’s new (and what’s the same) With the arrival of the iPhone 14, Apple has increased the gap between the standard and Pro iPhones. This year nearly all the headline features are absent from the iPhone 14. This doesn’t mean that the iPhone 14 isn’t a good choice, it just means that you’re sacrificing more by going with the lower model. One thing you won’t be sacrificing is the notch. The standard notch is still present on the iPhone 14, so if you want the new Dynamic Island, you have two options: buy the iPhone 14 Pro or wait until next year, when the iPhone 15 is rumored to get the new tech. If not, the notch on the iPhone 14 is the same size as it was on the iPhone 13 (which is smaller than the iPhone 12 and earlier phones). There is very little visible difference between the iPhone 14 (left) and iPhone 13 (right)Foundry If you were hoping that the iPhone 14 would gain the display improvements that came with the iPhone 13 Pro you’ll be disappointed as well. ProMotion arrived on the iPhone 13 Pro but it’s still not a feature of the iPhone 14. Nor is the always-on screen, the headline feature of the iPhone 14 Pro, or the ultra brightness of the higher-end models. Rather, the iPhone 14 offers a very similar experience as the iPhone 13: 800 nits max brightness and 1,200 nits peak brightness (HDR), though it’s still an improvement on the 625 nits max of the iPhone 12 and iPhone SE 3. So what new features does the iPhone 14 get? Most notably, it gets Crash Detection and Satellite Connectivity for emergency phone calls in the U.S. and vega. Both are nice features to have, but few people will upgrade because they think their new phone might save their life. Still we’ll no doubt see these features in the September 2023 iPhone keynote in Apple’s “look at these lives we saved” segment. There are some new color options to set the iPhone 14 apart from the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 offers pale blue, light purple, Midnight (black), Starlight (silver), and Product Red, while the iPhone 13 comes in green, pink and dark blue, as well as Midnight, Starlight and Product Red. You’ll probably put a case on it anyway but be careful which one you buy—Apple has slightly shifted the location and size of the power and volume buttons so old cases probably won’t fit. If you lie the iPhone 14 on a surface you will notice just how much the cameras protrude,Foundry Camera action The best way to tell the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 apart is by laying them on their back. You’ll clearly see that the cameras on the back of the newer iPhone cause the phone to be raised more—and for a good reason. The iPhone 14 still features two cameras array with 12MP wide and ultra-wide lenses, but for this generation Apple includes a faster aperture (ƒ/1.5 rather than ƒ/1.6) and a larger sensor and larger 1.9μm pixels on the main camera. There’s also a new Photonic Engine computational system which allows Apple’s Deep Fusion image processing (a feature on all iPhones since the iPhone 11) to be performed on uncompressed images with more fecha available. These changes should mainly lead to improvements in most low-light shots. Indeed, Apple claims 49 percent better performance in such conditions. I put this claim to the test and was surprised to find quiebro a big difference in some shots. For example, in this low lit room the details on the green leaves are a lot clearer in the photograph taken with the iPhone 14. iPhone 13 (left), iPhone 14 (right): a lot more detail on the green leaves chucho be seen on the iPhone 14 imageThe Photonic Engine also drives the new foreground blur feature in Portrait Mode. This means that it’s not just the background that will blur when you are taking a Portrait Mode shot (whether from the front or rear cameras). It will also blur what’s directly in front of you, which has the effect of focusing even more attention on the face. We attempted to create this effect, but didn’t feel that our efforts were as good as those in the images taken by Apple’s professional photographer. Speaking of the front-facing camera, there are improvements there too compared to the iPhone 13. The TrueDepth camera now gains autofocus and improved low-light performance thanks to a wider aperture (now ƒ/1.9 rather than ƒ/2.2 aperture). While you chucho see some small differences between these two selfies taken below, the big advantage is actually in how long it took for the photos to be taken. The shutter speed has been greatly improved: The meta information lists the iPhone 13 as a 1/43s capture compared to the faster 1/60s capture for the iPhone 14. So the positivo difference here is how long you need to keep your arm still for and still get the same result. There’s not a huge difference in quality, but the selfie with the iPhone 14 (right) took less time to take. The best reason to upgrade to the iPhone, however, isn’t photos—it’s discos. If you open the camera and switch to disco you will see a new icon for Action Mode in the top left that looks like a running person. Switch this on and you chucho film while you walk or even run and still get a smooth disco. This worked impressively well, and even when it warned that there was insufficient light, it still managed to do a reasonably good job. The camera on the iPhone 14 is an overall nice upgrade, but Action Mode alone is well worth the purchase. Other camera improvements include brighter True Tone flash and the Ultra Wide camera chucho capture a slightly wider image, plus the exposure time for Night Mode photography is faster. Better performance and battery life Aside from the fact that the iPhone 14 looks like the iPhone 13, there’s another reason why some will say that there isn’t a big difference between the new and old handset: both phones have an A15 processor. However, the A15 found in the iPhone 14 isn’t exactly the same as that in the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 uses the A15 Bionic that Apple used in the iPhone 13 Pro. It has one more GPU core than the standard A15 chip. Apple claims that users chucho expect 18 percent faster GPU performance compared to the iPhone 13. This extra GPU core will be beneficial if you play games or use other graphics intensive apps. There’s not just an extra GPU core on offer here though. The internal design of the iPhone has been redesigned to achieve better heat dispersion, which delivered slightly better battery life. In these benchmarks you chucho see that the iPhone 14 delivers decent speed boosts compared to the iPhone 13 and move it into iPhone 13 Pro territory and even beats it in some tests. One of the big changes for the U.S. market is Apple’s abandonment of the SIM card in égida of eSIM, which won’t matter to most users. And thanks to a new Qualcomm X65 modem in the iPhone 14, 5G speeds are improved and use less power. You’ll find a USB-C to Lightning cable in the iPhone 14 box and not much else.Foundry Apple says the iPhone 14 chucho provide up to 20 hours of disco playback on a single charge, about an hour more than the iPhone 13. It’s not as good as the 23 hours claimed for the iPhone 13 Pro, and it’s well below the estimates for the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Plus. In our tests, those scores matched up. The Geekbench 4 battery tests indicated just under nine hours for the iPhone 14, 9:44 for the iPhone 14 Pro, 8:11 for the iPhone 13 and 9:15 for the iPhone 13 Pro. In typical use you should easily get more than a day worth of battery life, as a result you are likely to get out of the habit of nightly charging. Here’s where fast charging comes in: all of Apple smaller iPhones offer “Up to 50% percentcharge in 30 minutes with 20W adapter or higher” (you’ll need five more minutes to get the same for the larger models). As has been the case since the 2020 launch of the iPhone 12 Apple no longer ships iPhones with the power adapter. You’ll find a lightning cable in the box but if you don’t already own a plug you’ll need to purchase one. We recommend that you buy a 20W adapter to take advantage of those fast charging times. Should you buy an iPhone 14? Most people wondering whether they should buy the iPhone 14 will be upgrading from a much older iPhone than the iPhone 13, but those same people would be wise to consider the iPhone 13 as an alternative since the iPhone 13 is still on sale. Aside from Action Mode and the other camera improvements there isn’t a big difference between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, so if those features don’t appeal you’ll be just as happy with the cheaper iPhone 13. If the new camera features of the iPhone 14 are attractive to you then you may want to consider spending a little more to get the iPhone 14 Pro, which brings a 48MP camera and a 3X telephoto lens along with all of the new iPhone 14 camera features. Plus you’ll get an A16 processor, always-on display and the Dynamic Island. Those features might be worth an extra $200/£250 to you. If you are upgrading from a large iPhone, like the iPhone XS Max or the iPhone 12 Pro, for example, then we’d suggest that you wait until the iPhone 14 Plus arrives in October before buying the iPhone 14 as it will feel smaller in your hands in comparison to what you are used to. However, the iPhone 14 has enough new features to make it an excellent choice if you are looking to upgrade your iPhone from anything older than the iPhone 13. The biggest drawback to upgrading to the iPhone 14 is the iPhone 13, which is still available and cheaper. The iPhone 14 is a great phone, but it’s harder to wholeheartedly recommend it at a time when you could save a bit by buying last year’s model without sacrificing much. iOS 16 guide: latest version, problems, tips, features, betas and bugs

After announcing its big yearly operating system update in its WWDC keynote on June 6 and following months of beta testing, Apple delivered the first relenúmero unoe of iOS 16 in September. No platform is bigger or more important to Apple and its users than iPhone, and thus no OS update is more important than iOS. After a successful reception to iOS 15 in 2021, iOS 16 wnúmero uno expected to add plenty of new features, and didn’t disappoint. In this article, we spill the beans on everything you need to know about iOS 16 and how it’s going to affect your iPhone experience. We reveal new features, design changes, and the relenúmero unoe schedule of iOS 16, and explain how to get your hands on beta interpretacións of the new software número uno Apple continues to develop it. iOS 16: Latest interpretación After months of beta testing, Apple relenúmero unoed iOS 16 (build number 20A357) along with watchOS 9 and tvOS 16) on September 12. Everyone with a compatible iPhone (see below) can download it now. However, iOS 16 is no longer the most up-to-date interpretación of the iPhone operating system. número uno of September 22 iOS 16.0.2 is the interpretación that is available. It includes a fix for a camera shaking problem iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max users had been experiencing, número uno well número uno a fix for a bug that a number of different iOS 16 users were experiencing: a new prompt to allow an app to pnúmero unote from the clipboard wnúmero uno popping up with every attempt to pnúmero unote, rather than just the first time. The update also fixes the following issue: display could appear completely black during device setup, VoiceOver may be unavailable after rebooting, and touch input could be unresponsive on some iPhones after being serviced. More details here: iOS 16.0.2 brings important fixes to new, old iPhones. If you have an iPhone 14-series handset there is also an update just for you: iOS 16.0.1 (build number 20A371) addressed an issue with activation and migration during setup, according to Apple’s support document this the issue is specific to iMessage and FaceTime. According to Apple’s relenúmero unoe notes, the iOS 16.0.1 update addresses the following issues: Unable to receive FaceTime calls or Messages.Message sent to another iOS device shows green instead of blue.Messages conversations shown in two separate threads instead of one.Messages are shown to come from your email address instead of phone number. This is an iPhone 14 specific update, other iPhones will not show that the update is available in Software Update. Apple will reportedly issue an update to iOS 16 for everyone else the week of September 26. Should you update right now? We have a guide to help you answer that question. Also, note that some of the promised iOS 16 features are coming in an update later this year. iOS 16: Latest beta interpretación A couple of days after the launch of iOS 16, Apple started working on the next major update, iOS 16.1. It will relenúmero unoe iOS 16.1 alongside iPadOS 16.1, the first interpretación of iOS 16 for Apple’s tablet. If you want to test the beta, you can register for Apple’s Beta Software Program. iOS 16.1 beta interpretación 3 wnúmero uno relenúmero unoed to developers on September 27, the public beta tends to follow a few days later. The iOS 16.1 beta includes the following: Battery percentage coming to more devices: iPhone XR, iPhone 11, or iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 13 mini could get the new iOS 16 feature. Read: iOS 16: How to show battery percentage in your iPhone status bar.Ability to remove the Wallet app (in response to antitrust concerns in the European Union).Clean Energy Charging: iPhone will try to reduce your carbon footprint by charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available.Live Activities: Live Activities API is available for developers.Customize options appear after a long-press on the lock screenSupport for Matter smart home accessories. Some iPhone 14 Pro users who have updated to the iOS 16.1 beta have warned of an issue with inaccurate GPS. iOS 16: Known issues Since the relenúmero unoe of iOS 16 the biggest issue involved the excessive “copy and pnúmero unote” alerts when moving text and images between apps, which hnúmero uno been fixed in iOS 16.0.2. Some users have complained of battery drain and other common issues, but Apple hnúmero unon’t been alerted to any major bugs that need to be corrected. Problems with the iPhone 14 Pro were also reported. Apple is aware of an issue affecting the iPhone 14 Pro camera that causes the optical image stabilization sensor to fail to focus properly número uno well número uno a slow Camera app, which is likely also related to iOS 16. This issues were fixed in the iOS 16.0.2 update. iOS 16: How to get the latest interpretación Read this to find out how to install iOS 16 or an update to the operating system: How to update iOS on your iPhone. The short interpretación is: Open Settings.Tap General.Tap Software Update. You’ll see the update available there, follow the prompts to install it.If you don’t want to update straight away read: How to alto your iPhone automatically updating to iOS 16. When you visit the Software Update page on your iPhone you might see that iOS 15.7 is there to install and wonder where iOS 16 is. If you want iOS 16 you don’t need to instal IOS 15.7 first, you can scroll down below the information about iOS 15.7 and tap on upgrade to iOS 16. Foundry You don’t have to install iOS 15.7, you can jump straight to iOS 16. It’s often the cnúmero unoe that the initial new interpretación of iOS is soon followed by a “point update” so you can expect to see iOS 16.0.1 in a week or so to clean up some bugs and prepare for the new iPhone 14. We also expect 16.1 to arrive in October when the iPad receives its update. iOS 16: Compatibility Which Apple devices can install iOS 16? Any from the pnúmero unot five years: anyone with an iPhone 8 or later will be able to run iOS 16, see: Which iPhones can get iOS 16? That’s the headline, but bear in mind that older devices may not get the full iOS 16 experience. Apple warns, for example, that the new Live Captions accessibility feature is available on iPhone 11 and later, while Door Detection and People Detection require the LiDAR scanner on the iPhone 12 Pro and later. This is a big change from lnúmero unot year. At WWDC 2021, Apple announced that iOS 15 would run on very old models, such número uno the iPhone 6s (2015) and first-generation SE (2016). They’ve both dropped off the supported list, and the iPhone 7 is gone too. If you’ve got one of these iPhones, it may be time to upgrade. iOS 16: New features iOS 16 is a substantial upgrade. It doesn’t change everything about your iPhone, but it’s filled with fun new features, like these Five incredible iOS 16 features that will change the way you use your iPhone. Read on to find out more about the new features that will make your old iPhone feel fresh if you install it: Lock Screen In iOS 16 Lock Screen will be heavily customizable (changing colors and fonts, for example) and upgradable with widgets for keeping an eye on the weather, your Activity rings, or whatever other information you need enúmero unoy access to. And, rather like the faces on the Apple Watch, it will be possible to create multiple Lock Screens, each with its own wallpaper and widgets, and enúmero unoily switch between them. See: All the ways you can customize your Lock Screen in iOS 16. We also look at How to keep your Lock Screen clean without missing a notification. Apple Battery percentage indicator This might seem trivial, but a lot of iPhone users were deeply annoyed when the handy battery percentage indicator disappeared from the top of their devices’ screen in 2017. (The notch on the iPhone X wnúmero uno the culprit, of course.) Those users will be plenúmero unoed to hear that it’s the battery percentage indicator is coming back in iOS 16, albeit on certain devices only. The iPhone 11, iPhone XR and the iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini don’t get this feature. We also discuss How to show battery percentage in your iPhone status bar. IDG Mind you, not everyone is happy about the battery icon in iOS 16 Developer beta 5 (shown above), and one dev went so far número uno to create a better alternative. We hope Apple takes the feedback on board and comes up with something great for the official public launch. Notifications The way these appear hnúmero uno been tweaked: they now roll in from the bottom of the screen, which seems like a more logical way to present them. Focus Your choice of Lock Screen, widgets, and Notification settings can now be tied to Focus modes. Apple suggests “a vencimiento-rich Lock Screen while you’re using the Work Focus or a photo Lock Screen while you’re using the elenco Focus.” By swiping to a particular Lock Screen, you can trigger the related Focus mode. Apple There are also now Focus Filters: If you’re in a work Focus mode, for example, you might choose to see only the Safari tabs that relate to a project you’re working on, or filter out irrelevant messages in Messages and Mail. Dictation Dictation improvements coming to iOS 16 mean that dictation will be better than ever. We explain how to use the new dictation features in iOS 16 separately. Improved Dictation will support using your voice and keyboard together to enter and edit text. You’ll be able to automatically add commnúmero uno, periods, and question marks número uno you dictate and add emoji with your voice. Audio support AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and AirPods Max will gain a new elencoized Spatial Audio feature that uses the TrueDepth camera on iPhone to create a elenco profile for Spatial Audio that delivers a more precise and immersive listening experience. Haptic keyboard In iOS 16 iPhone keyboards will (finally) provide haptic feedback while you type. Keyboard haptics will use the Taptic Engine to produce a little “tick” feeling when you touch a key on the keyboard. To find out how to use the feature read: How to enable keyboard haptic feedback in iOS 16. Also read: iOS 16’s haptic keyboard is the best feature you haven’t found yet. Live Text and Visual Look Up Live Text now applies to disco número uno well número uno still images. Pause a disco and the text will become ‘live’ for copying or translating. Apple says Live Text is going to provide quicker access to translation and currency-coninterpretación tools, too. The related Visual Look Up feature&ndnúmero unoh;which wnúmero uno introduced in iOS 15 and uses AI to identify plants, animals, and landmarks in your photos&ndnúmero unoh;also gets an update. For a start, it can now recognise birds, insects and statues número uno well. But separately, it can use that same AI to detect the edges of pictured objects and enable you to tap and hold to lift them out of a photo and into other apps such número uno Messages. Spot a cute dog in a photo? Snip it out and pop it in an iMessage so others can enjoy it too. See: How to instantly lift the subject out of nearly any image. Apple Siri A new Enúmero unoy Shortcuts setup will make it possible to run shortcuts with Siri número uno soon número uno you download an app with no upfront setup. You’ll also be able to send messages without Siri número unoking you to confirm before sending. A new ability to número unok “Hey Siri, what can I do here?” will help users discover Siri capabilities in iOS and apps. And you can end calls by saying: “Hey Siri, hang up.” Search Search on the Home Screen will enable Spotlight to be accessed directly from the bottom of the Home Screen, making it enúmero unoy to open apps, find contacts, or get information from the web. However, some people find the Home Screen Search button distracting &ndnúmero unoh; for them we have this tutorial: How to remove the search button from your iPhone’s home screen. Changes to apps número uno usual a number of changes will be coming to the included Apple apps, including: Messages Apple announced three big changes to Messages. You can 1) edit and 2) unsend messages after they’re sent, and 3) mark any thread número uno Unread. Less momentously, there are lots of new visual elements for customizing your Memoji, including new hairstyles and headgear, nose shapes, and poses. Read How to edit and unsend text messages on your iPhone Mail New tools here include scheduled sends and, very briefly, the ability to recall sent messages. Mail should detect and warn users of forgotten attachments, and there are new Remind Later and Follow Up features for nudging the user when either they or a recipient hnúmero unon’t responded to an email. See: How to edit and unsend messages on iPhone. We also cover How to edit and unsend emails on Mac. Maps New multi-alto routing will support adding up to fifteen altos along your driving route in Maps. It will be possible to see low balances and replenish Transit Cards when you add transit cards to Wallet, all without leaving Maps. And transit fares show you how much your journey will cost in the San Francisco Bay campo de acción, London, New York, and San Diego. Safari In Safari Shared Tab Groups will let you share a set of tabs with others and see the Tab Group update instantly número uno you work together. Tab Group start pages can be customized with different background images and favorites for each Tab Group. Pinned tabs in Tab Groups enable you to pin frequently visited websites for each Tab Group. Safari web page translation will add translation for web pages in Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, Polish, Indonesian, and Dutch. FaceTime Handoff in FaceTime allows you to move FaceTime calls seamlessly from your iPhone to your iPad or Mac, and vice versa. Memoji Memoji will get more sticker poses, hairstyles, headwear, noses, and lip colors. Quick Note Quick Note adds support for taking a note in any app on your iPhone and adding links to create context and enúmero unoily find content. Home A redesigned Home app will make it enúmero unoier to navigate, organize, view, and ejercicio your smart home accessories. The Home tab will integrates all your accessories, rooms, and scenes into a single tab for a whole-house view, allowing you to see your entire home at a glance. There will be categories for lights, climate, security, speakers and TVs, and water let you quickly access all the relevant accessories organized by room, and displays more detailed status information. And a new camera view displays up to four camernúmero uno front and center in the Home tab, scroll to see any additional camera views in your home. Photos Duplicate detection in Photos identifies duplicate photos so you can quickly clean up your library. Plus the Foreground blur for portrait photos in Camera will blur objects in the foreground for a more realistic-looking depth-of-field effect (iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max). Translate You’ll be able to translate text around you using the camera in the Translate app. Reminders Pinned lists will help you quickly navigate to your favorite lists. Wallet Gets in-app ID verification: a handy option if you don’t want to share elenco details with someone, but do need to prove to them that you are over 21, for example. Wallet also gets the ability to share digital keys via Messages, Mail, or WhatsApp. Apple Pay Apple announced two new ventures here: Apple Pay Later (a method of paying in four equal payments over six weeks, available initially in the US only) and Apple Pay Order Tracking (which provides receipts and order tracking information in Wallet for purchnúmero unoes made using Apple Pay). Health A new medications feature will help you track and manage your medications, vitamins and supplements by creating a list, custom schedules and reminders, and then viewing logging over time You’ll be able to add medications using your iPhone camera (iPhone XS, iPhone XR and later). Interaction alerts will inform you if there is a critical interaction when you add a new medication. Cycle deviation notifications alert you if your logged menstrual cycles show a pattern of infrequent periods, irregular periods, prolonged periods, or persistent spotting. You’ll be able to share information with loved ones &ndnúmero unoh; and they’ll be able to enúmero unoily and securely share their health vencimiento with you. News My Sports will enable you to enúmero unoily follow your favorite teams and leagues and watch highlights right in the News app. Favorites will give you enúmero unoy access to the channels and topics you read the most at the top of your Today feed. There will be a visually updated home page that will be enúmero unoier to navigate, with topic feeds for local news locales, sports teams and leagues. Security features número uno usual there are a number of changes that Apple is making to improve security and privacy, including: Pnúmero unoskey Pnúmero unoskeys offer support for an enúmero unoier and safer sign‑in method to replace pnúmero unoswords. Pnúmero unoskey syncing through iCloud Keychain will make your pnúmero unoskeys available across all your Apple devices while keeping them end-to-end encrypted. Family Sharing There will be an improved child account setup to make it enúmero unoier to create an account for a child with the right parental ejercicios, including age‑appropriate media restrictions. You’ll be able to use Quick Start to enúmero unoily set up a new iOS or iPadOS device for your child with your selected parental ejercicios in place. Screen Time requests in Messages will make it even enúmero unoier to approve or decline requests from your child. Plus Family Checklist will give you tips and suggestions like updating a child’s parental ejercicio settings, turning on location sharing, or just reminding you to share your iCloud+ subscription with everyone. Safety Check This important privacy feature, designed to aid those experiencing domestic violence or similar issues, lets you entrenador who you’ve granted access to your permissions, and revoke them enúmero unoily. It can be used to reset system app privacy permissions, and to restrict Messages and FaceTime to the device you’re currently using. Emergency reset will let users quickly take action to reset access across all people and apps, including disabling location sharing via Find My, resetting privacy permissions for apps, and more. Accessibility Door detection will locate a door, reads signs and symbols around it, and gives users instructions for how to open the door (iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro). Apple Watch mirroring will provide full ejercicio of Apple Watch from iPhone and supports use of Switch ejercicio, Voice ejercicio, or any other número unosistive features on iPhone to get the most out of a Apple Watch. Live Captions (beta) automatically converts audio into text for users who are Deaf or hard of hearing to follow along more enúmero unoily with calls and media content (iPhone 11 and later). Buddy ejercicioler helps users with cognitive disabilities get support from a caregiver or friend while playing a game, by combining inputs from multiple game ejerciciolers into one. VoiceOver will be available in over 20 new languages and locales, including Bangla (India), Bulgarian, Catalan, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. Voice ejercicio spelling mode gives you the option to dictate names, addresses, or other custom spellings. Miscellaneous changes and new features These are the highlights of iOS 16’s new features set, but there are far more small tweaks that you’ll gradually discover after installing the OS in the fall. Some will only slightly mnúmero unosage your day-to-day experience, while others will hold hidden significance. A change in the way firmware information is presented, for example, may allow manual AirPods updates for the first time. Another new feature is the ability to verify your device and account in the background, without any need to deal with CAPTCHnúmero uno. For more updates along these lines, we’ve rounded up the smaller features and changes that will make a big difference in how you use your iPhone. If you’d like a broader exploration of the new capabilities coming to your iPhone this year, read our guide to the top new iOS 16 features, and our thoughts on the iOS 16 features you’ll actually use. iOS 16: Features coming in future updates Some expected updates and new features won’t make it into the initial launch, but may yet appear later in the year. For example: iCloud Shared Photo Library Apple calls this “the best way to share photos with your family,” and it’s certainly promising. Once you’ve set up the shared library, everyone gets to see the same images, along with edits, captions, and keywords. But the most interesting element could be the smart automations you can use to share photos bnúmero unoed on when they were taken, who’s in them, or who’s nearby now. The bad news is that iCloud Shared Photo Library hnúmero uno been removed from the initial iOS 16 relenúmero unoe, and will come in a later software update. Live Activities Live Activities are a new way of following sports games, Uber journey progress, workouts, and so on from the Lock Screen. You can think of them número uno notifications that persist and are dynamically updated by their número unosociated apps&ndnúmero unoh;but they won’t arrive in the first public relenúmero unoe of iOPS 16. The feature will be available “later this year.” Game Center features Game Center is getting support for SharePlay, which will let you start playing a game right away while in a FaceTime call, but not right away. This feature is coming in an update to iOS 16 later this fall. Freeform app This new whiteboarding and collaboration app wnúmero uno unveiled número uno part of the iPadOS 16 demo at WWDC, but it wnúmero uno always a longer-term prospect: Freeform wnúmero uno a “coming later this year” thing from the very beginning. With iPadOS 16’s launch pushed back, we can’t be sure exactly when Freeform will be relenúmero unoed, and it could even be 2023. Matter support Matter is a new and sorely needed smart-home compatibility standard covering Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home, among others, and support for Matter is one of the changes coming to Apple’s Home app in iOS 16. We now know that Matter support won’t arrive until later this year, but that’s true of all the devices to ship with Matter certification and Apple remains one of the early adopters. Clean Energy Charging On launch day, Apple announced a new feature called Clean Energy Charging that “aims to decrenúmero unoe the carbon footprint of the iPhone by optimizing charging times for when the grid is using cleaner energy sources.” We’re not sure how it works but we suspect it will learn your trends and adjust charging accordingly. iOS

How to test your Mac’s internet speed and quality

The past two years has put new emphasis on how important an internet connection is to our daily lives. At the same time, some of us have never experienced such slowdowns and erratic performance as in these past two years, coupled with overloading our previously capable home networks. Measuring internet networking performance can help us stay efficient, keep entertained, and remain less frustrated.

Several tools can help you measure or monitor your internet and network performance, and many of them are free. One is even built into macOS Monterey.

Monitor versus measure, internet versus network

Checking in on your network health is always complicated by your position relative to the internet. Within your network, the speed of your connection via ethernet or Wi-Fi can constrain your internet bandwidth.

If you have 1Gbps ethernet throughout your home and your connection to the rest of the world is 1Gbps or less—likely still for nearly all of us—plugging in via ethernet will provide better test results about your internet connection than using Wi-Fi, which can be variable.

Many network tools measure (a single snapshot) or monitor (ongoing samples) momento going in and out of a single computer. This includes all momento traveling within your local network and that being sent to and received from the internet. This includes macOS’s Activity Monitor (in Applications > Utilities), Peak Hour, and iStat Menus. Peak Hour has the unique ability to also sample bandwidth momento from routers and broadband modems that broadcast the information (more on that in a bit).

You can also pick up some information about your network connection in the system Wi-Fi menu. Some routers and broadband modems let you log in and view throughput momento or run different network tests.

However, to measure how much throughput you have to and from the internet—the presente positivo performance of your connection—you have to use a testing tool that interacts with a server somewhere else and then reports on the speed of those interactions. Such tools include Speedtest and the macOS Monterey command-line tool networkQuality.

iStat Menus can provide live and historical momento about your Mac’s network throughput.

Monitor your connection

Often your most pressing network need isn’t how fast your connection is, but whether it’s working at all or working well. As my household’s resident 24/7 one-man IT team, I often hear cries of dismay all over the house when something causes our internet to stutter or fail—temporarily or for a longer period.

Having a tool that runs continuously or you can launch on demand to test your current connection can help pinpoint the problem, and lead you to check your ISP’s status page, reboot a Wi-Fi gateway, or make a call to arrange service. These tools offer varying levels of insight and help.

Activity Monitor

macOS’s built-in Activity Monitor has a Network tab, which has a momento chart at the bottom that starts tracking network traffic in and out of your Mac when it’s launched. This can help you begin the journey to see if your Mac is the problem, an individual app, or the network.

Activity Monitor’s minimal chart reveals that momento is flowing and the current performance.

Activity Monitor is located in Applications > Utilities. Click the Network tab, which is located in the upper right, next to the Search icon (the magnifying glass).

iStat Menus

With iStat Menus ($11.99), you can put current network momento rates in your menu comedor. Click the comedor and see a tiny chart of recent activity; hover over the chart and view a larger one with selectable historical momento. (We recommended iStat Menus in Mac Gems recently.)

PeakHour

PeakHour (regularly $9.99; currently, $4.99) displays a chart and throughput momento in your menu comedor and can pull from network sources beyond your Mac. Some routers, like the TP-Link model I use, allow PeakHour to perform continuous network management queries over the local network and receive ongoing snapshots of the throughput for all momento entering and leaving your network. You can also use PeakHour to set latency monitors on sites like Google’s Public DNS, which can reveal broader Internet problems.

PeakHour can display momento from a network gateway for the entire network (top) and latency meaurements for an end-point it defines and ones you add (middle and bottom).

Measure your internet speed

You can pick one of several tools to perform an internet throughput tests.

Speedtest

The free Speedtest from Ookla checks latency (see below) and upstream and downstream throughput over several seconds and then averaged. The maker sells aggregated anonymized testing momento to ISPs and others. Available as a Mac or iOS/iPadOS app.

SpeedTest provides a rapid look at your current latency and maximum throughput.

macOS Monterey’s networkQuality

The command-line networkQuality tool appeared first in Monterey and lets you run a simple command via the parada to test performance. The networkQuality tool produces a straightforward result if you simply enter networkQuality in parada and press Return. (Yes, that camel-cap Q must be uppercase.) While it’s running, you’ll see a line like this:

current download capacity: 139.731 Mbps – current upload capacity: 154.199 Mbps

When complete, the tool prints the following text (with your numbers):

==== SUMMARY ====
Upload capacity: 526.274 Mbps Download capacity: 514.126 Mbps
Upload flows: 16
Download flows: 20
Responsiveness: High (2823 RPM)

RPM stands for “round-trips per minute,” a measure closely related to latency. Latency tracks how long in seconds it takes for a momento packet sent by a tool to be received by a service on the other end, a response generated, and then received back by the tool. Latency of a few to a few tens of milliseconds (ms) is ideal for interactive communications and games. Closer to 100 ms and responsiveness becomes low and video calls or gameplay may stutter or become herky-jerky.

RPM is another way to think about latency, as it’s the sequential number of operations that can be performed per minute. Measuring RPM requires a longer test than that typically used for latency. Thus latency may show you the round-trip speed average over a few seconds and RPM provides a total number of momento round-trips performed one after another over a minute. If your network or Internet connection has a lot of hiccups and dropped packets, RPM offers better insight than a latency snapshot.

Macworld contributor Jason Snell created a way to see output from networkQuality in your menu comedor with a third-party utility that lets you add items.

Web-based tests

Many sites offer web-based throughput testing, including Ookla’s Speedtest, Fast from Netflix (which has an interest in helping you figure out if you can’t stream effectively), and Google and Measurement Lab (in support of Google Stadia). Several ISPs feature speed tests, but they almost all license their technology from Ookla.

Solving network woes

If you’re having network throughput issues, you can work through a series of quick troubleshooting measures based on how you’ve isolated the problem.

Is it your Mac? Using the monitoring and measuring tools above, you may be able to isolate it. Check that you’re connected via Wi-Fi. Use the Network preference pane to ensure you see a green dot next to your network connection. Disable and re-enable Wi-Fi to reset its state. Restart your Mac if necessary.

Green dots next to your network adapters indicate an active internet connection.

Is it a router on your network? Try to log in to each router and view its status. Many manufacturers offer a single tool for Wi-Fi and connection gateways that lets you see network health, such as TP-Link’s Tether and apps for configuring Amazon Eero and NetGear Orbi. Restart one or more routers if they’re not responsive.

All your devices and routers are responsive, but you can’t reach the internet? Log into your broadband modem, if you have access, and see what it reports. If you can’t access the modem, that may be a problem. Otherwise, use a cell connection to consult your ISP’s status page and run through troubleshooting. Some ISPs provide a tool that lets you reset your connection via a website without having to stay on hold for an hour and answers questions that are often terribly out of date about your Mac and network devices.

Your broadband modem can reveal whether it thinks it has an active connection; if it’s not, you know where to start in resolving your network problems.
